How much do I need to retire on $10,000 a month for 30 to 40 years?

Compare the portfolio and savings contribution for 30, 35, or 40 years of retirement income.

To fund $10,000 a month in today’s U.S. dollars for 30 years, the scenario estimates $4,129,994.32 in future dollars at retirement. The amount rises if the same portfolio must cover 35 or 40 years.

How does a longer retirement change the target?

Start at 35 with $500,000 invested and retire at 60. The examples use a constant 0.5% monthly return, 2.5% annual inflation, and 0% tax on gains. Contributions are fixed in dollar terms and made at the start of each month. The app also increases withdrawals with inflation and starts them at the beginning of each month.

Years of income Portfolio at retirement Monthly contribution before retirement
30 $4,129,994.32 $2,724.51
35 $4,485,793.15 $3,235.38
40 $4,784,235.29 $3,663.89

The model spends down the portfolio over the selected period. If you want assets left for later care or heirs, budget for those separately. Test a lower investment return to see how sensitive the plan is.
